For
centuries people consider this wonder place for great choice
to celebrate and reminisce theirs ancestors
One
of the most significant (and definitively most famous) is monumental
mausoleum to Unknown Hero provided by sculptor Ivan Meštrović
on initiative of King Alexandar I Karađorđević
to commemorate enormous victims who gave their lives for unification
and defense of the country that was about to be born. Even though
Serbs consisted
more than 90% of overall victims in WWI on
the territories of future Kingdom, in order to support Yugoslav
unity king has ordered that this monument consists statues/pillars
commemorating all the nations over whom he has governed: Sumadinka,
Panonka, Crnogorka, Kosovarka - Serbs;
Dalmatinka, Zagorka - Croats;
one Slovenian and
one Macedonian ("old
Serbian"). Mausoleum is placed on position of Middle Age
town of Žrnov which ruins now can be seen only at photos.
On the mountain was also placed one of the Belgrade
symbols - Avala TV Tower which was a 202.87 meters (666 feet)
tall telecommunication tower that was open for visitors and visible
throughout Belgrade. Its building started in 1963 and was finished
in 1965. It was destroyed on April 29, 1999, by NATO bombardment
during the Kosovo War, supposedly to put Radio Television of
Serbia off the air. It was the only tower in the world to have
an equilateral triangle as its cross section as it was one of
very few towers not perched directly into ground, but standing
on their legs. It was, also, the only
tower in the world mounted on a tripod. From its construction
in 1965 to its destruction on April 29, 1999 it was the tallest
building in the Balkans and until September
11, 2001. it was the tallest building ever destroyed.
Its reconstruction has begun as of 2006 and is scheduled for
opening within a year
At the foothill, on the road to Belgrade suburbia
